5.2.6 Lush Cosmetics (United Kingdom and International)
Lush Cosmetics was founded in 1995 by Mark Constantine and Liz Weir. It is a UK-based retailer
renowned for its handmade cosmetics and ethically conscious production processes (The Retail
Bulletin, n.d.) 114 . The company emphasizes sourcing ingredients from small producers and
cooperatives, ensuring that its materials and supply chains are environmentally and socially
responsible. Lush also invests in community-based projects that support broader social and
economic development. The company is a staunch opponent of animal testing and only sources
ingredients from suppliers who share this commitment. It has earned a reputation for its use of
natural ingredients, environmental sustainability, and ethical business practices, for example,
offering some products without packaging (so-called “naked products”), encouraging customers
to return empty containers for recycling in exchange for rewards, and upholding strict ethical
sourcing standards (Mr. Serotonin, 2021). Although Lush products are more expensive than many
market alternatives and have shorter shelf lives due to minimal preservatives, the company’s
production model has created a wide range of positive social impacts: (1) it supports small-scale
farmers and cooperatives globally, thereby improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable
farming practices while ensuring fair compensation; (2) it reduces waste and promotes recycling,
advancing environmental sustainability; (3) through its Charity Pot program, Lush donates post-
tax proceeds from the sale of its Charity Pot lotion to grassroots organizations working in
environmental conservation, animal welfare, and human rights, an initiative that has received
widespread international support; (4) it actively raises awareness on social and environmental
