Moreover, Muhammad Yunus himself exemplifies the power of communication. Following his
Nobel Peace Prize, his global outreach opened doors to new partnerships, particularly with
multinational corporations that bring financial strength and advanced technologies. His efforts
also inspired a new generation of youth, many of whom have gone on to become driving forces
in the global social enterprise movement.
5.5 Summary
This chapter has explored the evolution of Grameen Bank and its network through an incubation
process that created a supportive ecosystem for the development of social enterprises. The case
studies presented highlight the wide variety of business models that can fall under the umbrella
of social enterprise, from traditional goods such as handwoven textiles, garments, and
agricultural products, to energy-efficient solutions and innovative technologies like digital
platforms that connect borrowers with lenders or offer e-commerce services. At their foundation,
social enterprises operate much like traditional businesses: they produce goods or services for
sale. What distinguishes them is their dual mission, not only to sustain themselves financially but
also to address pressing social issues. Their goal is not limited to profit-sharing, but to balance
profitability with meaningful social impact. Crucially, most social enterprises need time to grow.
Because they often operate on slim profit margins, they depend on a strong support system,
incubation mechanisms that provide access to funding, technology, innovation, and marketing.
These elements are vital to helping social enterprises achieve long-term sustainability while
advancing their mission to solve societal problems.
