(3) Impact Water supplies clean drinking water to schools in Uganda, using ceramic filtration
systems for smaller schools and ultraviolet purification for larger institutions. As of 2016, the
company had installed water filtration systems in schools serving more than one million students.
Other examples include Bive, a healthcare service network for low-income communities in Caldas,
Colombia; Seniors House, a day and residential care service for the elderly in Albania; and Savco
Miller, a plastic waste recycling enterprise in Kampala, Uganda. Savco Miller produces garbage
bags, seedling bags, and industrial mats, while offering skills training, protective gear, and
premium pricing to informal waste collectors.
5.1.4 The Grameen Network Ecosystem
What began as a few dollars in microloans has evolved into a full-scale bank with annual revenues
exceeding USD 187 million and more than 18,000 employees as of 2022 (Grameen Bank Annual
Report, 2022). Figure 5.2 illustrates the network of social businesses operating both within and
beyond Bangladesh. These enterprises span traditional and modern sectors alike, reflecting
Muhammad Yunus’s conviction that wherever there is a problem faced by the poor, there lies a
business opportunity. In his view, opportunity is always present.
